The cost of transitioning to renewables is the second most important thing, the most important thing is the cost to your entire civilization if you rely mostly on renewables and you get hit with a volcanic winter and or a large solar storm. The first gives you weather like Texas was crippled by, but for multiple years in a row, where there is no summer and it is one continuous winter, the second natural disaster destroys all of your photovoltaic arrays and you have to wait in line for years before enough can be made to replace them, assuming the factories can work at all because they have fossil or nuclear power backing them up. Either of the above would devastate a fossil and nuclear powered civilisation, but for one that uses mostly renewables it would probably be a death sentence.
