What Australians don't tolerate is the federal government and specific politicians knowingly driving soldiers over the edge and into madness due to "moral injury", then scapegoating them for what happens. If you don't, as a politician, have the courage and the integrity to accept ultimate responsibility for all outcomes then you should not be getting involved in conflicts, particularly those that are not directly connected to the defence of Australia. Any ADF member who suffers moral injury as a consequence of over exposure to the battlezone is not legally culpable no matter how horrendous their behaviour, i.e. if they were not sane at the time of the offence, even if the offence can be proven to have happened. It all comes back to the politicians in Canberra who pushed an agenda that required more from the numbers of personnel who were available, more than was reasonable to ask of them, and the fact that ADF psychologist's reports about the impact of doing that were ignored makes Canberra even more culpable than the soldiers.
