I've been involved with FOSS development for about 25 years and seen manying misconceptions about it written by different people. What it is from a philosophical POV is not always the same as what it is in practice. We once even had Window$ weenies calling us communists etc., but it is more about creating a diverse software ecosystem that allows artisan level contributions at many levels, not just code cutting, so it is far from the centralised control idea of communism, the irony is that the old monolithic way of proprietary software systems was more like that. As for the cloud, be very careful because it is a cloud and will blow away the moment the weather turns bad, and that is only a matter of time so make sure you have a contingency plan, or set of them that work over different time scales because you don't know how long the cloud solution may be offline, it really does depend on how drastic an event took it out with destruction of the hardware or datalinks meaning you are out of business for a fatally long time if your competitor was savvier than you about disaster recovery. Easy come, easy go, sums up cloud tech. Once you are falling off the cliff it doesn't matter how agile your arm waving is.
