If you think that is bad look up the Carrington Event, then imagine the carnage when that happens again particularly to all of the solar PV arrays that are literally vast antennas pointed at the source of their future destruction. They are not adequately protected either and the estimated overvoltages are orders of magnitude higher than that which is known to irreversibly destroy the actual silicon junctions.

@paulveenings6861 Yeah we could get the big trifecta, low mag field, big solar storm, and a massive volcanic eruption. That would 100% be the end of the modern world. But what are the odds of that? I know that the first and third threats can be linked.

@killbotone6210 That is not how we manage risk, we look at the cost of avoiding the risk vs the cost of not then factor that into budgets, proportionately. You have no experience at that organisational level? There is an entire profession that looks at such things, actuaries.
