This is why there should be a coal to synthetic fuel and gas industry in Queensland to turn those vast reserves of black coal into a backup option should anything disrupt international supplies.

@multioptioned Australia has 300 years worth of coal that can be turned into synthetic gas and liquid fuels, even using hydrogen produced using solar energy. This is one area where solar power makes sense as you can add value to an existing resource and you can store the results so that the intermittent nature of solar is less of an issue, your storage evens out the bumps in supply and demand. It turns out that there is a location in QLD that is in the middle of a coal field as big as Saudi Arabia, that gets a lot of sunlight, has access to artesian water (for the hydrogen) and has an existing pipe infrastructure that connects to the national grid and the export hubs.

@multioptioned Not entirely true, look at how Western Australia managed things.

@rattusfinkus It isn't really cheaper, the price for going electric is mass deaths, during the next volcanic winter. @rattusfinkus That is a lie, the chance of a volcanic winter happening again is 100%, only the timing is open to debate, but you don't get a warning either so you must have some form of full backup for insurance. You can't mothball such installations, or the mines, they need to be kept fully operational to kick in within a few days notice of solar insolation dropping away to lower than mid winter levels.
