Why do essential services use Microsoft Windows? It is a grab bag of software with so many opportunities for exploits and it is very hard to rip out all the bits you don't need without it breaking completely. Whereas Linux is a much better choice, you can build it up from very little and just add the functions you really need then lock those down very hard so that they can't take the entire system down even if one does have a random security hole that is hit with a zero day exploit.

@Joe Shabidu Well yes there is that isn't there, but that implies a level of corruption in the choices our governments make with regard to software systems and the price of that is these successful hacking attacks against public infrastructure, disruptions that could have fatal consequences.

@kellysouter4381 Not true at all. It is free and there are many variants including ones for newbies who are transitioning away from Windows.
