There are over a million security cameras in Australia and if they are web connected IP cams they are probably running a version of the Linux operating system and it will not be up-to-date, i.e. if it will contain known security flaws. This is not just a privacy issue; those cameras are general purpose computers that can have malicious software loaded on to them that can be used to attack other computers with denial of service attacks, compromise them, or form a mesh of virtual routers to hide the tracks of cyber criminals, amongst other forms of weaponization. So do you think that the government has done anything meaningful to audit existing cameras and to ensure that vulnerable ones are not imported into Australia. Nope, not AFAIK.
