Firstly, the 2000 nuclear tests were'nt all done at once or within a matter of hours, some of them were conducted underground, some were conducted at sea. 100 Hiroshima sized bombs would certainly have made the UK a virtual wasteland had they been dropped over a period of say, a week. Since the late seventies/early eighties, both the US and the SU have both had enough warheads to devastate most of Europe and the Americas.Nuclear "winter" is the by product of all the billions of tons of debris thrown into the atmosphere had both sides gone full scale. It would have only taken a period of approx two weeks of CONSTANT exchanges to do so.

  42.  @pts5217  That may be true but the only emotion detectable here is not coolth or clear headed logic. It's a huge amount of discomfort and unease. It's not natural to display absolutely no sign of pride or joy or excitement. As you say, they had a different demeanour during the broadcast from space , so why not here? It would be just as acceptable and understandable. Even if they had been briefed to be detached, why?
