  1. "And this is why grouping things arbitrarily is pointless." It does not matter in the least whether the north or south hemisphere has a higher or lower average anything. It's important to remember that America is only wealthy because it got colonized hundreds of years ago. If it hadn't been, then North America would be no more economically better off than South America.

  2.  @SycoticReaperMk  The difference is that the American colonies were done so by people with the intention to develop new lives in a new place, it was colonized with the intent to live there (not all of them, but enough of them). A lot of other colonization programs around the world is that they were set up like factories to extract resources and send them home, where the head colonizers were just day-workers that fully intended to return home one day, with very little investment toward actually having generations of future offspring in this new place. So America became Europe 2.0, while most other colonies just became mining operations for some other country.

I wonder if it would be possible to reallocate California's control mechanisms, like by having less than ten "regions" within the state that each have a lot more control over all the smaller local governments within them. This would allow them to take precedence over projects that have significant regional benefits, but would in some way harm the smaller local interest. I assume this would at least take an amendment to the California constitution, but that shouldn't be impossible.

  7.  @goldenfloof5469  The government already has "gone after them," sort of, just in a positive way. The BBB Bill included a bunch of funding incentives for building and maintaining EV charging stations, but only IF they used the generic standard. This means Telsa gets none of that money. . . unless they open up their charging stations to generic chargers, which they have been piloting in a few locations. It's a little complicated and will take some work, but seems totally doable. Within the next five years or so, you'll probably be able to charge any EV at any Tesla charging dock.

  10. There is another story that I would like you to bring your expertise to as a follow-up to this, Australia's handling of the covid outbreak. Gun control advocates often bring up Australia as an example of what not to do, because they claim "it leads to tyranny!!" and cite things like Australia's covid lockdowns and quarantine programs as "evidence" of this. From my perspective, I think their measures were reasonable, and that they appear to have saved a lot of lives, but it would be nice to have a clear video breakdown to point to of what they did, what they did not do, and what impact it had on their covid rates, relative to what it could have been if they had not done so.

  13. He really does need to put effort into "what's next," figuring out what the country would become after his death. Otherwise it would just be like colonial Africa, where everything was fine until the colonial governments left, but then the state would completely implode because there were no traditions of governance that could hold it all together.

  14. I don't like the tone of this video. It says things like "when there are solar storms, the new tech is less efficient," but that leaves out that such things are rare, and they are much much much more efficient otherwise. You need to look at the overall outcomes, not the outlier situations. Now what is true is that farming is becoming less and less viable at small scale, mom-and-pop farms, but the same is true of ALL aspects of life, why should farms be an exception? To me, if there are more efficient ways to do things, then we should always do it that way, to produce things most efficiently. It's AFTER that decision that we figure out how to make those most efficient methods work out for actual humans. Figure out a plan for how humans do better when farms do better, rather than blaming the farm equipment for making farms "too efficient."

So if you're producing twice as much per year, and yet you lose 10% of that due to some outlier situation, you're still ahead by a wide margin overall.

  16. I don't think it's fair to consider congestion pricing "disincentive to driving." Traffic is ALREADY a disincentive to drive. People who choose to drive are already deciding that inconvenience is worth putting up with. ALL congestion pricing does is price OUT the poors. It's just a way to allow business and the wealthy to benefit from roads, and not poor people.

Whoever designing the planes for this model, they should design them with replaceable batteries, so that people could get into a plane in New England, and it could hop down the coast or across the country with multiple stops, but without them having to get out or wait for more than a few minutes at each airport. This would be slower than flying non-stop from NY to LA, but a lot faster than any land route, and if fuel prices made long haul flights too expensive for most, then it would be a minor inconvenience to take maybe 6-12 hours to make that trip. Still no easy answer for oceanic flights though.

  18. They should just give Congress an ultimatum. Say "if we maintain this route across the Northwest, we will lose $X per year. You will pay us $X per year, or we will close it down." And of that for all the long distance lines, with specific breakdowns as to what that would cost each state along the route. Then run ads in those states, letting their people know that this is happening, and who is responsible if the bill doesn't pass. I'm sure they could get train-friendly politicians to put the bills on the floor for them.

Like they would still remain in competition on the actual train service, but they could all chip in to fund the new line being created (in addition to government funding), so they could then all use it.

  25. This is not a problem, the solution is to landfill the plastic. Plastic that is responsibly landfilled does not cause a problem, the only problems caused by plastics are plastics that are just tossed on the ground or into a river, and recycling does nothing to help with that. If you throw your plastic in the trash, then you have done your part, end of story.
