I don't see the argument that this "myth" has somehow "harmed human history." I mean, the "social credit" system you described might work fine on very small scales, and still do in the modern era on such small scales, but there is zero way to make this practical on any scale larger than a Dunbar's Number situation. If you have any community larger than a couple hundred people, you need some sort of hard metric by which to make fair transactions with people you do not know or trust. You can't just give a stranger things in hopes that eventually you will get back an equivalent return, you need to have something you can offer that has a measurable value.
