Those odds go down significantly if the hospitals are overwhelmed by a wave, as is currently happening in several US states, or if you get the Delta variant, which is more contagious. And that is just considering the survival rate, there is also the damage beyond simple survival, like long term health complications from covid, or just the inconvenience of being in a hospital for weeks or months of painful recovery. Not to mention the strain that this is putting on healthcare workers, or the healthcare costs, or the fact that hospitals overloaded with covid patients then do a worse job at handling every other medical problem like cancer or heart attacks. Also, the sooner we get everyone vaccinated, the sooner we can get past covid. If lockdowns, mask wearing, and other restrictions bother you, then vaccination is the path out of that, and whining about how you don't like those things won't make them go away any sooner.

You certain words in the same post, whether favorably or unfavorably, and that posts tends to not appear. It does not seem to take sides, except against clearly stating political points. I also find that when other people can say things I can't, it's either just because of the other words I've been saying, or because they were using unicode characters to spice up the words so that hey pass the filters, but really, that's just too much hassle. This is just not a great place to have detailed political discussions because they don't want to hire enough human moderators to actually do a good job. But that's all beside the point.

If someone has covid, and ends up spending months in a hospital due to covid, and then dies, while in the hospital due to covid, their cause of death will be listed as covid, but will also include things like "organ failure" and "oxygen deprivation" in the report. This does not mean "it wasn't covid's fault! Leave poor covid alone!" Covid IS still THE cause of death, it's just that they make specific note of the exact mechanisms that led to that outcome. If someone gets shot through the heart, and dies, and they put "heart failure" in the coroners report, that is not evidence the shooter can use that "the bullet didn't do it."

It is comforting to think that there is some grand plan, that everything happens for a reason and if something terrible happened it must be the fault of someone, because then you can blame that person and hold them accountable, but a lot of things in the world just happen, and nobody is to blame for them, there can be no "justice," you just have to try and handle the consequences as responsibly as possible, and burying your head i the sand is not responsible.

  56.  @jessicaa8038  They are (exercising their first amendment rights), in most cases, but even though they have the right to do something, actions have consequences, and they are responsible for those consequences. If their exercise of first amendment rights is causing harm to others, then they bear moral responsibility for that harm. There are different ways to discuss this topic that do not lead to antisemitism, public protests are an imprecise tool that lead to collateral damage.

I do think that some participants in these protests are antisemitic and/or are expressing antisemitic viewpoints, and that the inevitable chaos of a public protest provides these people cover for their actions. I further believe that the public protests accomplish nothing of any value toward their stated goals, while at the same time there is an active rise in antisemitic content, so that is what we need to be focused on preventing, however one feels about the war Hamas launched in Israel.

  69.  @cliffy00  I trust them to want to make money, and not want to be sued into oblivion for pushing a product that wouldn't work or was dangerous on this scale. If they make +30B+ from vaccine sales and then it turned out there was anything wrong with it, they would stand to lose twice that, and the government would be the first to collect. But I'm not concerned that there is anything wrong with the vaccines because they have been vetted by all sorts of unrelated agencies that could not possibly have a shared interest in misleading anyone, and have also been given to more people than most drug tests ever see without any serious complications, so it's basically a non-issue outside of the tinfoil haberdashery.

  70.  @cliffy00  You can't sue individually, but if there were significant side effects then the government would sue (and do a much more effective job at it than your lawyer could ever hope to). Also, they are only protected form unintended side effects, so if they did deliberately cut any corners or sweep anything under the rug, that would blow their shield wide open, terrible idea for them to risk. And again, we don't have to trust them, because their product has been verified by numerous independent sources already. I'm no fan of big pharma overall, I think that the industry should be nationalized and all drugs should be funded via grants and sold to the public at cost, but they manage to do miraculous work when they set their mind to it, and by all reasonable indications the various covid vaccines are safe and effective, at least when compared to the virus itself.

The only corners cut were in red tape, not in medical procedure, and the only added risk was to early testing volunteers, because they were overlapping some steps that could have led to problems there (but didn't). They were fully tested before the emergency authorization, and have already been given to more people than any clinical trial in history, with very minimal side effects. Full approval might happen by the fall, but waiting that long would be a complete waste of time and lives. The polio vaccine was approved within a year of testing, and it's already been a year since the covid vaccines entered testing. Everyone in the world got the polio vaccine.

To you it might fall into the same category, but that's really a "you" problem, because it doesn't fall under the same category under the law. It falls under a different category. Businesses might require TB testing, and would be allowed to do so, IF there were a TB pandemic going on at the same scale as covid. But there isn't. Boom.
