  6. It's really not a problem if you aren't doing crimes, and you can get into a LOT of trouble if you poorly document your business transactions and make "mistakes" on taxes or other documents, so the real lesson is "don't do crimes."

  7. I just view the protests as pointless. They aren't going to actually change anything based on these campus protests. Either they look at the situation in Gaza and decide that they need to change policy, or they won't, a bunch of college students chanting about it isn't going to move the needle.

  11.  @failureofgravitas  That's beside the point, we were still flying US planes over Vietnam, dropping bombs, and US soldiers were patrolling Vietnam, shooting people, it was, in any rational sense, a war. My point was that there is no such situation at the moment. US troops are nowhere shooting anyone, US planes are not bombing in Gaza. Israel is at war, the US is not. What kids in US get up to has little relevance to the people actually having a war right now. They are fighting for their own survival.

  14. Ok, so, doesn't "Twitter" no longer exist? I mean, the company that paid the lawyers, wasn't that company obliterated the instant Elon took over? So the Twitter that existed before Elon no longer exists to file a lawsuit, and the company that existed after that was not the one that paid the money, so they also could not sue. Now maybe Elon could sue the board or whoever for making the moves that they did, but this would have nothing to do with the law firm.

  16.  @economicprisoner  Disney definitely does control a LOT of on-property food places, and would be entirely responsible, but Ragland Road is, I believe, not one of these Disney kitchen properties. Disney Springs in general is a much less "Disney" area than most of their properties, it's mostly just a normal open mall, that happens to have easy access to Disney transport.

  31. The writers of the show are on record that they have no idea how "lawyering" works, and could not be bothered to hire anyone who did. Instead of hiring a lawyer or paralegal to advise them, they just chose to wrote relatively few actual legal cases in their lawyer show.

  32. I had a thought about the "Monkey-selfie" story. So ok, a picture by a monkey can't be copyrightable, but wouldn't it be possible to "create" a copyright for it? Like if you "Andy Warhol" something, convert one work of art into something else, then so long as you manipulated that image sufficiently to avoid derivative work claims, you could copyright that, right? So if you wanted to use the "Naruto" photo, you could just take the original, modify it in some way such that it is distinct from the original (but perhaps in a way that would not at all diminish its charm), and then only punish that version of it to the world. Then you would have the copyright over that original work, and since the animal or AI or whatever in question had no rights of its own, it could not be challenged as being copyright theft. It's basically "stealing from an imaginary person." Of course if anyone got ahold of the original, unmodified version, then they would be free to use that as they see fit, so lock it up tight or destroy it if it matters that much to you. Wouldn't that work?

  33. I think Biden's step was reasonable, given that it would only apply for less than 24 hours under his watch, and it would make more sense to maintain the status quo until the Trump admin had their chance to do something. Now whether we agree with what Trump does, we'll see.

If it were a straight "everyone runs at once, but first past the post," then that would tend to give Trump an advantage, as it did in the primaries, since while only around 38% of the electorate actually like him, they are LOCKED IN, whereas the 60%+ that don't like him tend to disagree with who they prefer as an alternative. If it were ranked, that might still benefit Trump, since while he would get a lot less 2-3 votes than other candidates, he likely would get the most 1s, and it would depend how the votes are summed up. It would be interesting as a test case, to take a group of representative voters and run them through both a standard mock election and a ranked choice one, and see how that goes.

  44. I don't think AI lawyers are there yet, but they certainly will be within our lifetimes. There will be a point in which human lawyers will be no more capable of beating an AI at court than they are beating them at chess. The only thing that would prevent AI lawyers taking over would be protectionist laws to arbitrarily disallow their use.
