  1. A great book. Very well written. Lucid as a fine math book. Bjarne is a genius we all can benefit from. Edit: MathSourcerer, Ill be waiting for your reviews of any of the two books of Alex. Stepanov. I think you will love them. They're very math oriented C++ books, as Stepanov was a math grad before becoming a C++ guru.

  3. Wow. What a great email and what an amazing kid ! I was never close to that in my 16, even if I had developed a "mania" with physics and math. A mediocre mind at the time that simply would just not give up. What I found in college was that spending so much time with myself killed my social skills and made my life more difficult. So my 2c is this: search to find think alike people in your city/country/online, make a study group. Having a support circle will help you succeed your goals, no matter how tough they are. Keep up the good work, don't be that hard on yourself. Remember you are just a human, even if a human I'd say I admire for their drive. Last thing I got from my dad: when you're at school, your job is to study hard. So keep at it. You'll get to make money later. If you study well and succeed in your goals (eg. get into university), that's a big help to your mom.

  5. Btw, B. Demidovich had written an amazing book on numerical mathematics called "computational mathematics". MIR editions were amazing and most of their books are gems. Thank you for the review.

  6. Programming is a great skill for any mathematician. Not only for calculating stuff, or typesetting text (LaTeX) but also for proving theorems (Coq, Isabelle, Lean, Agda, etc). Ps: I found Steve Summit's website on C around 2003. It's still active, with solid notes on the K&R book. Thanks Steve !

  11. Thank you for your topology books reviews ! I'd love to see your review on an introductory book I like: "First concepts of Topology by W.G.Chinn and N.E.Steenrod". It's hard to find at a good price, but there are some copies in the US on a well known online website for used books. I got mine today :))

  19. Hey, I've got this book and I love it ! Dover editions FTW! It doesn't go in depth but this should be expected since it covers many themes of discrete math and it's not many pages long. I'm happy you did a review, thanks !

  37. What a beautiful book. Looks like applied vector analysis to physics, mechanics, electrodynamics etc. Surprised to see the Green functions there (but maybe I shouldn't be!)

  39. So much truth here. A professor of mine that I look up to said in an interview about his life once, that he had to work harder than the more talented people to get where he got. "A hard working mediocre student will beat a talented person that doesn't work as hard". He managed to explain theoretically a physical phenomenon that now bears his name (along with the name of his PhD thesis advisor). Thank you again. I really love these motivating videos you make. Keep it up.

  42. This book and the one by Spiegel ("Advanced Calculus") were the two books that I used as complements to the Thomas-Finney calculus. Both in their original english editions, bought in the 70s by my father when he was an economics grad student. I cherished them more than the Bible. Amazing books.
