  1. Shapiro is right on this issue. People are overly emotional on the issue of SSI. If you look at how SSI was formed and the economic conditions at the time, you will understand why the retirement age and payroll taxes have to go up if we want this program to continue existing. When the program started, it was 150 workers supporting 1 retiree. Less than 5% of the people lived to retirement age to collect any benefits. By law, the proceeds collected from SSI must be invested in US Treasuries. Fast forward to today and we have 56 million people collecting SSI today which is equal to 1/3 of the working population in the US and those people live longer with an average age of 75. The money that purchased US bonds has been squandered on fighting foreign wars and not on projects that improve the economy like infrastructure. If voters want SSI to continue into the future, something drastic has to happen and everything has to be on the table including increasing the retirement age and increasing SSI taxes. We need to expect that most of us will never see an SSI payment in the future. Government spending has to decrease dramatically to cover the impending payouts.
