Way back in the early 60s the only reason I didn’t apply to Camford was that I didn’t have Latin. I never thought it a disadvantage since, although hugely eminent scientists and historians have been to these ancient piles, over the years I have met some of the dumbest people on the planet who went there. This isn’t envy, I find it hilarious, since I have attended three Russell Group universities in my lifetime (quite a lengthy lifetime so far!!). This was during a period when very few went to university; those that did were amongst the higher levels of intelligence - particularly in physics and history. It looks like intelligent students need to avoid these places nowadays. Goodness knows what qualifications their lecturers have obtained and from where! I won’t name anybody, or their alma mater, but I recently browsed a recent publication by a certain ‘professor’ on aspects of WWII. After two or three pages and finding more errors than days in the month, together with appalling English grammar and syntax, I nearly threw up. According to the blurb in the rear dust cover, this ‘professor’ was a world authority - I threw the volume back on the shelves in disgust and pondered ‘authority on what’?
