  1. It’s always a pleasure to listen to intelligent argument. Although I am most definitely an atheist, one cannot doubt the influence of religion that has purpose, having a great influence on our history. Buildings, music, the printed word - the ‘feel’ of books, our innate sense of ‘being’; all to the good. I was an undergraduate at York in the late 60s and regularly strolled around absorbing the grandeur of the Minster and the historic city. I confess to almost being in a trance when visiting Marston Moor, imagining myself back in the Civil War period. Having a picnic, years ago with friends by the River Derwent at Stamford Bridge, caused me to daydream about the decisive defeat of Tostig and Harald by our King Harold. Sadly, there is so much trash nowadays; newspapers, rubbish TV programmes, low standards in state schools and so-on that youngsters are given very little of value by which to make judgements or stimulate imagination.
