Bear with me - I’ve just calmed down and am having a late, midnight coffee.
I live in Bolton, but earlier in the day (Sunday) had travelled to Altrincham to shop and have a meal.
Completely unaware of anything happening, I returned to Bury on the Metrolink tram intending to catch the bus back to Bolton.
There, security staff informed me and others that no buses were going into Bolton, they would stop at the Bolton/Bury boundary and come back. A section 34 notice was issued for the whole of Bolton metropolitan borough area (details online) to (according to a statement issued by an ecilop spokesman) to ‘avoid disruption’.
Well I don’t know about you, but absolutely no other information was available - and I’m not a millionaire who spends £50 on a taxi to get home - I returned to Manchester to catch a train (I have a concessionary pass).
Arriving at Bolton station (about 5.30), it was difficult to take in. The footbridge to the interchange was blocked off by half a dozen ecilop, with approximately a dozen riot vans nearby the station exit with some two dozen British Transport ecilop and a similar number of Greater Manchester ecilop further away. Clearly in the distance vans with flashing blue lights were blocking all the roads. This is just the side of town near the station. Looking into the distance, Victoria Square (the area in front of the town hall) was crammed with ecilop. Every one of them wearing riot gear.
Strangely, taxis were allowed so I shared one and the ecilop directed it in one direction away from the station.
Now here’s a fact (not an opinion), earlier, I politely spoke to one of the heavily armed British Transport ecilop asking if any buses were running (they weren’t since the entrance to the interchange was blocked anyway), he said “I’m sorry, I don’t know the area, I’ve come from Bristol.”
Well blow me down, I have never, ever seen so many ecilop - all heavily armed. For one to say he was from Bristol shows considerable planning, hardly an off the cuff response, and massively greater than the eciloping of other demonstrations where uncivilised behaviour abounds.
The situation made me feel genuinely uneasy (I’m 76 years old).
One strongly suspects the useless PM and pointless ‘home secretary’ are reducing freedom in a less than surreptitious manner. I voted for Reform, not for them.
