Orwell in that sense wasnt a liberal then since he didnt think government was justified to promote individual liberty. He just outright praised the anarchists in Homage to Catalonia who wanted to get rid of government in pursuit of stateless socialism. To anarchists, individualism relies upon cooperation and mutual aid to functionally exist in human society.

@iiii4024 Anarchism is the absence of hierarchy it is not the absence of organization. Thus why it is seen as a stateless form of socialism. It has also shown itself to be able to exist in reality as said with the anarchist revolution in Catalonia and with modern anarchist projects such as the Indigenous Councils of Oaxaca, Exarcheia, Barbacha, and Freetown Christiania. There are also smaller scale setups such as the Really Really Free Market projects that demonstrate how a modern gift economy can behave. Anarchism is also influenced by evolutionary theory and anthropology most noted in Peter Kropotkin's book Mutual Aid: A Factor of Evolution.

@iiii4024 There are multiple examples of anarchism being put into practice and working such as the Magonistas of Oaxaca, Exarcheia, Freetown Christiana, Barbacha, and the Really Really Free Market Projects just to name a few. For someone claiming to be a fascist you already show you have no idea what fascism is. Fascism is just capitalism in decay. It is not collectivist since it is based around prioritizing the good of the ruling class and not society by merging capitalist interests directly with the state. Benito Mussolini was very clear on this point when discussing the concept of class collaboration.

Success is a relative term. The USSR already did a similar strategy with the NEP and under their leadership undid many of the actual gains the working class made during the revolution. China has done the same and helps perpetuate global capitalism and support for totalitarianism under the flimsy promise of eventually withering away in the future. America and its allies are entering a point of decay where populism encourages corrupt governments and fascist tendencies. Anarchists have been warning against the very corrupting nature of the state itself for over a century and Orwell even was known to have written highly of the revolution that occurred in Catalonia.

@toker6664 Trans is not a mental illness. Studies show that trans people who experience more accepting environments do not experience the same issues of mental illness. Same thing goes for being able to actually transition which helps improve their mental wellbeing. If you were to find your genitals were altered you would still identify with your gender not your gentials. Even if you do not care about trans individuals it should also be noted that it is infinitely more authoritarian to demonize millions of people and using government regulation on them sets a precedent for further regulating the rights of other people.

@toker6664 If you identify as a male and you had your sexual organs changed you would still identify as a male. Its no different with trans people. Also I've known several trans people and none of them are child lovers. Though Ive come across plenty of non trans people who prey on underage people. Statistically it is also shown that the majority of child abusers were in fact in heterosexual relationships.

Not really since he was sympathetic to mainly democratic socialism and anarchism. See his book Homage to Catalonia which discusses the anarchist revolution during the Spanish civil war. Anarchism has seen a resurgence in modern times with the works of Peter Kropotkin and Alexander Berkman being rediscovered. There are even anarchist groups such as Revdia fighting the Russian invasion of Ukraine right now.

Richard Wolff is cool at a lot of times but his advocacy of cooperatives misses a crucial part of Marx's analysis of capitalism. See the first two lines of Das Kapital in regards to commodity production. Marx understood that simply collectivizing the means of production does not move us out of the capitalist mode of production. Despite Marx's disagreements with anarchists there would be similar critiques and observations made by anarchists such as Peter Kropotkin.

They left out the part where he spoke very highly of an entire anarchist revolution that broke out in Catalonia during the Spanish civil war. A very crucial aspect of what influenced his beliefs.

Last time Ayn Rand's ideas were tried out to create a Galt's Gulch it failed badly. There was also the events in early 2000s Argentina where the capitalists did something similar to what Rand wrote in Atlas Shrugged by leaving the country and factories. Instead of the facories collapsing the workers themselves took over the factories and kept things running until the capitalists came back to make the government arrest them. Her thoughts on individualism as well should be questioned since she thinks its individualistic for someone to submit themselves to the authority of a wealthy powerful few.

@DeathEater93 The plot of Atlas Shrugged is that capitalists leave to their own utopia while their factories and businesses fall apart without their expertise. Yet we have multiple instances in reality where it is shown workers can function just fine without capitalists. In fact it is thanks to the existence of capitalists that workers tend to be mistreated and suffer the mistakes of the capitalist. Which is ironically a collectivist concept for workers to lose their job just because the guy who owns the company is incompetent at their job.

@DeathEater93 there were characters such as Francisco Danconia who owned a mining business and purposely left it to ruin at the expense of the workers and it was explained multiple times that business owners were brought over. That is also avoiding the fact too that Galt's Gulch was already tried by fans of Ayn Rand in Chile and it ended in disaster with them squabbling over rights to the property and water in reality. Also I hate both capitalism and the state. Both infringe on the individual. Read Max Stirner.

Milton Friedman's worked helped support the brutal dictator Pinochet. Also capitalism and socialism are different modes of production. Mixed systems are just keynesian capitalism. Socialsim isnt just government running everything. Anarchists are a type of socialist and advocate decentralization while making services publically available. See Orwell's book Homage to Catalonia on this.

@KayAteChef But they didnt factionalize in fact we have multiple examples of anarchism working. The anarchists were able to unite broad groups across Iberia along working class lines. The FAI formed the various affinity groups across the region while the CNT was formed out of the various worker unions across Spain including Basque, Asturians, Catalans, and Castillians. Economic freedom in the anarchist sense means being able to freely contribute and take as we see fit. Otherwise it is a system built to benefit the ones with the most land and money. The ones with the most land and money in turn are able to have the most politicial influence as opposed to the average individual.

@KayAteChef You can go check for yourself. A Home Owner's Assocation uses state law to force residents into line and has rigid regulations. Anarchist communes rely on the consent and input of the people inolved in the community. Worker collectives allow workers to take back the full amount of what they work while also providing input and a voice in the process as opposed to just working to make someone else rich and having no input. Places like anarchist Catalonia also made upper class restaurants into essentially public soup kitchens for everyone to eat and transformed hotels into extra hospitals and shelters.

@KayAteChef Anarchist communities have that without the authority of the state. Individual freedom is protected through mutual aid and restorative justice. Arbitration can also be done with temporary neutral third parties. The law of the state however disproportionately benefits the ones with the most money, land, and political influence. Someone with a billion dollars is not punished for assault the same way someone with only a few thousand dollars is. The result being that the state inevitably favors and protects the ruling class.

@James_36 There doesnt have to be a decision maker. Lookup anarchist Catalonia. When workers took control of their factories and farms they operated without the need for decision makers above. Planning and scheduling was according to the workers themselves. If you want to speak of murderous ideals then look no further than capitalism. Capitalists have helped fund the war machines for two of the largest wars in all of human history. Capitalism has us over produce food and medicine at the expense of workers and the environment then proceeds to kill millions yearly through starvation and treatable diseases because to do otherwise would not be profitable. 60 million died of famine in India thanks to the exploits of the East India Trading Company. Millions more continue to die due to capitalists funding rightwing death squads and perpetuating the military industrial complex. The gap between the rich and poor becomes wider and political power continues to become further centralized into the hands of the wealthy few.

@James_36 The earlier famines were dealt with through storing food surplus and subsistence farming. The arrival of the British transformed their economy towards growing cash crops and selling their surplus which made the famines more severe. During such famines they continued to export food and little money existed for the local population to buy food from elsewhere when there was little in supply. Also anarchosyndicalist Catalonia demonstrates outright that workers can functionally take control of the means of production directly without the state or capitalists. The trade unions and affinity groups were able to coordinate complex manufacturing, city planning, military defense, education, farming, and so on. Other examples include the Indigenous Council of Oaxaca, Exarcheia, Barbacha, Ukraine Free Territory and the Really Really Free Markets which have explicit anarchist influence as well. Nonanarchist examples with similarities include Zapatista Chiapas, Kurdish Rojava, and the worker take overs of several factories in Argentina in around 2004.

@James_36 They still do but the Francoist military and police murdered and imprisoned a lot of them with current laws protecting capitalists. The trade unions despite this have been ongoing in Catalonia and have even gained traction in areas such as Puerto Real as well. There is also the Barcelona Squatters movement which has anarchists involved in providing free housing to people too. There are also numerous current day examples too such as Indigenous Council in Oaxaca, Exarcheia, Barbacha, Freetown Christiania, and the Really Really Free Market Projects just to name a few.

@chrislee176 Well to start. Non-aggression has many issues with it. Aggression is a relative concept. A factory poisoning a community, someone smashing a window, businesses forcing the homeless into negative degree temperatures, landords forcing out tenants, and so on very from person to person on who is the aggressor. Orwell actively advocated shooting fascists for simply holding fascist beliefs. This was in his book Homage to Catalonia which also discussed the anarchist revolution that occurred there. The anarchists should be noted for seeing capitalism and the state as inherent aggressors against the common individual.

Marx didnt distingush communism from socialism. That came much later with Lenin who said socialism is lower phase communism to justify the Soviety Union. Anarchists also would advocate stateless socialism and do not distinguish the terms either. Countries like the Nordic ones are social democrat and not socialist. Socialism/communism specifically means the means of production being under worker control and the mode of production being according to ability and need as opposed to just for profit.

@kalebproductions9316 That's a justified concern but anarchism has shown it is able to provide mediation without the state. Usually this is done through the various groups that engage in collective responsibility, seek out third party arbitrators, and restorative justice as opposed to capital punishment. The Zapatistas are technically not anarchist but they share many elements and lessons and have demonstrated they can have a peaceful functioning community without massive individual violence. Same too happened in Catalonia during the anarchist revolution that Orwell wrote about.

Though even going off of that logic that is not a justification for maintaining hierarchy especially when you admit that it is possible to engage in a socially cooperative manner that has been shown time after time to be more beneficial to a majority. @crescendo5594 You do realize even "nonpolitical" studies support the sources I provided? If you've taken even basic anthropology youd know this is the case. Time after time human socieites tend towards egalitarianism and hierarchy has lead to poor distributions of resources and an imbalance in authority which in turn means instability. Going even further such cases of reliance on hierarchy help contribute to conditions for a general system collapse as outlined in Joseph Tainter's The Collapse of Complex Societies. A "mixed capitalist economy" is just keynesian economics. It has resulted in entire industries getting bailed out with trillions of tax dollars while the working class suffered the losses during every annual recession that occurs due to the boom bust cycle inherent to the capitalist economy. In terms of starvation it is again quite the opposite. We overproduce food and medicine yet millions die yearly of starvation and treatable diseases because while the capitalist market encourages overproduction it discourages supplying everyone since it would not be profitable. This is called artificial scarcity and it is a direct flawed byproduct of capitalism. This isnt even getting into how capitalism centralizes wealth and political power in the hands of the owner class and worker class making it so that lobbying and politicians funded by big corporations is an inevitable result. On a slight sidenote it should also be noted that crime rates have been improving but that has less to do with capitalism and more to do with better funding of various services such as aid and education for example which anarchists too have shown to be able to provide.

I provided two comprehensive lists of anarchism in action that are also verified and respected in anthropological spaces. You dont get to dismiss them because you think they are "political". @crescendo5594 Starvation halved and life expectancy improved because of our advancements in technology and medicine. This was happening even before capitalism where we steadily improved agriculture and medicine and not as a result of capitalism. Furthermore such advancements are attributed to the evolutionary concept of mutual aid since scientific and technological efforts are a social effort. We dont just invent and improve things in individual bubbles. If you want evidence to this there is Zapatista Chiapas for example which despite being anticapitalist also saw reductions in the birth death rate, improvements in infrastructure, and in education. So we know for a fact its not an exclusive thing that can be attributed to modern capitalism.

@crescendo5594 You do realize blindly providing statistics from states isnt an argument for capitalism? You are trying to justify capitalism correct? I already agree and aknowledge that state services have helped show improvements such as in crime rate and health. Though if you looked into the sources I gave youd know these exact same services are more than possible within anarchist societies. These are not improvements as a result of capitalism but improvements in spite of capitalism. Furthermore how does this justify keeping around hierarchical institutions if we know that we can exist without them? If you understand we can improve our present situation then why the strong opposition to actually improving our situation further and make an inherently centralizing and corrupting institution such as the state less crucial in day to day lives?

@crescendo5594 I never said cooperation and individualism are competiting concepts. The whole point of anarchism is that cooperation allows for individualism. Also the Soviet Union has nothing to do with anarchism. Though I would like to point out that the USSR experienced economic growth and the swap to industrialism under Stalin's collectivization and industrialization policies. So idunno what you are getting at here. Economic growth doesnt necessarily equate to individual wellbeing either. Idunno how you think this relates to anarchism or capitalism for that matter.

Also in terms of anarchist economists there is Pierre Joseph Proudhon, Alan Pengam, Michael Albert, and Robin Hahnel to name a few. Also if an anarchist nation was a nation then it wouldnt be anarchist. Though the examples I gave and listed are bigger than various nations technically in area and population.

@crescendo5594 Your first point on industrialism requiring private ownership and capital is contradicted by your example in the USSR where they engaged in industrialization directly alongside forced collectivization. Your second point on nations and areas is addressed by the several lists I gave of anarchist regions in action. Which if you want to go further there are various studies done on them such as health studies on places such as Zapatista Chiapas. Adding onto your second point, you claim it's not an accident that we are experiencing global capitalism. That's no different than someone in the middle ages claiming that the rule of kings is the only system for us to experience since there are kings everywhere. Just because capitalism and hierarchy exists doesnt justify its existence especially when we know there are alternatives that help improve individual freedoms, worker conditions, ecological sustainability, and public health.

They were backed by the Nazis and fascist Italians. The Falangists played a key role in aiding the nationalists. They were also not just attacking the Bolsheviks but also the anarchists and peasants in general. In fact the white terror of Spain was known to be much more brutal and even engaged in hunting peasants for sport.

This is also including the fact that these were not ordered killings but in fact deaths often due to uncontrollable mob violence. The lowest estimate for the white terror of the franco government is 160,000 deaths. So just by numbers alone the White terror was much more brutal. Then you have the fact the Francoist regime first and foremost was protecting the interests of the rich business owners which is why they targeted and decimated the trade unions.

The video left out the part where Orwell wrote an entire book titled Homage to Catalonia which further discussed his involvement in Spain and how he grew sympathetic of the anarchist revolution there. Anarchism advocates stateless socialism and have shown it is a possible means of achieving a society even more free than one restricted by the free market which inevitably centralizes wealth and influence into the hands of a smaller owner class at the expense of the working class.

@jameseverett4976 1. Something being undemocratic doesn't mean anti authoritarian. Democracy itself is a form of justifying authoritarian actions through a selected majority over a minority. 2. Capitalism is not democratic either. Both communism and capitalism are modes of production and not forms of government. To further add on to this, anarchism is a form of communism because the goal is not government control but a stateless classless society. We have had anarchism in practice before and in fact it reduced the amount of forced labor on people such as with syndicalist Catalonia where workers took over and decided their own hours instead of being forced.

Books being considered a "luxury" under capitalism is precisely one of the many things wrong with capitalist society. Orwell was sympathetic to anarchism in particular such as with his writings of Homage to Catalonia. Anarchists are socialists who critique capitalism on the basis that it is in itself authoritarian. It centralizes wealth and influence into the hands of a smaller owner class at the expense of the worker class. In modern times the average voting individual does not compare to the political power of capitalists lobbying the state and funding their preferred politicians.

@gregb6469 Stateless socialism is literally anarchism. We already have multiple examples of anarchism in action such as what George Orwell saw firsthand in Catalonia. People who decided to work for their own benefit took the logical conclusion that they should care for each other and not work under capitalists but for themselves. Capitalism by its nature makes people work to make other people rich and centralizes wealth and influence into the hands of an owner class at the expense of a worker class. Even Adam Smith admitted that capitalist professions such as landlords were parasitic practices.

Alternatively, we have a lot more studies in regards to anthropology or from people like Peter Kropotkin that have observed one of the more defining characteristics in our evolution and survival is in fact mutual aid and cooperation with humans being inherently social creatures.

@fernandofaria2872 Peter Kropotkin was a scientist first and foremost with mutual aid holding up as a theory even in modern anthropology. Something being inherent doesnt mean always being that way. It means that it is an essential component. Humans are inherently social because they need to interact with other people in order to survive and ensure their wellbeing. Greed leads to a small few hoarding disproportionate resources at the expense of the rest which in turn leads to an unstable and unhealthy society.

@fernandofaria2872 It wasnt narcissism. Lenin thought that seizing state power was the best way to implement socialism. Anarchists such as Mikhail Bakunin and Errico Malatesta wrote prior to the revolution on how the state is prone to centralizing authority and power. It was a matter of means defining ends.

Read his book Homage to Catalonia. He saw the anarchist revolution that occurred there. Anarchism is in fact stateless socialism and has seen a modern resurgence in part due to their remarkable ability to be employed with success in various ways.

@stefanl5183 Not him, but under Trump he was already trying to outright defend the brutality of the police and neo nazi supporters such as the ones who murdered a woman in Charlottesville 2017. He then further tried to criminalize vandalizing statues and protestors were getting abducted by vans under him. Then the fact he tried to get his supporters to stage a full blown coup. Biden is awful but Trump taking power again would mean the state would be further transformed into a totalitarian mess.

@stefanl5183 Trump has actively goaded on the numerous far right fascist groups that came out to restrict the free choice of a community to remove a Confederate statue. Jan 6 shows he is more than willing to encourage further violence if he feels it is opitcally viable. Also yes people shouldnt be arrested by the government for vandalizing statues. That also shouldnt be equated to people who stormed the capital at the encouragement of Donald Trump to overturn the election results and stage a coup. Trump is an authoritarian who would only further militarize the border and police when all evidence shows we need to be doing the opposite.

@stefanl5183 They werent vandalizing a building they were trying to overturn election results and impose their will on the rest. I could care less if they wanted to simply vandalize the capitol building the issue is that they wanted an authoritarian coup.

Capitalism as defined by socialists is the means of production such as a factory or farm being under the private control of a single person or group as opposed to being publically avaible. Democratic socialism advocates workers taking over their workplaces and running them democratically. Orwell however wrote more in favor of anarchism such as in his book Homage to Catalonia. The anarchists are similar in wanting the workers to take over the means of production but with no involvement from the state and addressing hierarchies wherever practical.

Trotsky was still pretty totalitarian and merely disagreed with who was in charge. The anarchists were the main ones actually critical of the Bolshevik revolution and Orwell's book Homage to Catalonia in part shows that his sympathies were with the anarchist revolution in Catalonia despite fighting in the POUM.

@Seabass-a Trotsky was in charge of the Red army which during the revolution under Lenin engaged in the forced expropriation of food and goods from the peasant population. He also led the Red army in crushing and destroying the anarchist Black army in Ukraine. His main difference with Stalin was that he wanted to continue a constant militant struggle beyond Russia while Stalin wanted to fortify within Russia. The Stalinists would do the same betrayal to the anarchists in Spain during the civil war just as Trotsky did to the anarchists in Ukraine. George Orwell wrote positively about the anarchist revolution in Spain in his book Homage to Catalonia.
