  1. Slowing down from orbital speed to Mach 3 requires almost as much fuel as launching the spacecraft. This is a Catch-22: instead of a 10-ton spacecraft, you now have 10+300 tons up there, which would require about 3 Saturn Vs to launch.

  2. There were plans for silos (for Blue Streak, IIRC), at least one was built (and still exists) but the cost became a problem.

  3. These rockets weren't accurate enough to hit an incoming missile. Using a nuclear warhead, they could disable incoming missiles just by getting in the general vicinity.
