  1. What she failed to understand to begin with is Rome didn't become an empire overnight. When Roman deposed their Etruscan rulers and decided instead of a king they chose to be ruled by a Senate. Which in a way was a very evolved idea in governance. It took many years of warfare before the peninsula was consolidated into what would be called Rome then a succession of other wars of expansion. This happened over long periods of time. Problem with most people in modern times is they don't realize things just don't spontaneously happen overnight. Empires don't just suddenly spring into existence. A long chain of events occur that eventually result in a nation suddenly becoming for all intents and purposes a empire. A prime examples is England, Germany, Austria Hungary, Russia, and even the United States. Of course a debate can be had as to whether or not empires are based on spheres of influence or actual holding of territory. Well sorry I kinda rambled there. Empires don't often happen overnight. The United States took at least 200 some years before we became major players on the world scene. Same holds true for ancient empires. On a side note though empires can often collapse in what seems like a instant though. Maya, Assyria, and Macedonia are common examples. Seemingly overnight collapse.
