The SCOTUS ruled in Deshaney v Winnebago and in Gonzalez v Castlerock the police have no obligation to protect anyone that isn't in either protective or detainment for suspicion of illegal activity. Thus the SCOTUS made this ruling with the full understanding that citizens have the right to keep and bear arms. No it isn't a mess as we have the right to self defense. However there are conditions that must be met and they do vary by region. Examples Florida has the stand your ground law, while Texas has the catle doctrine. Here in Tennessee one must retreat and if retreat is blocked or impeded then and only then can you use force. Also that force is only within these three conditions. 1. The aggressor cannot be running away from you. 2. The force used cannot exceed more than is necessary to stop the assault. 3. Force cannot be used if it would be to finish off a incapacitated aggressor. Hope this illuminates you.
