  1. Cmiiw, the spice in Dune was not to enable the navigators to fold space. The mechanism to fold space is independent of the spice. The spice instead was used to enhance the navigator's brain function to predict where the ship should go, otherwise the ship would just crash into some object in space with devastating results. The spice requirement itself was an aftermath of humanity fight against AI, which resulting with civilization wide ban of thinking machine.
