  1. In Hitler's fantasy, declaring war to USA meant he now could strike at US convoy guarding supply ships to Britain. But he did it so haphazardly that he didn't inform his own admirals about that plan, which resulted in several months of nothing against USA convoy ships. The U-Boat fleet were scattered all over the Atlantic hunting on their own instead of a coordinated strike force. It also did him no favor that the Atlantic Charter between Roosevelt and Churchill decided that Germany would be their first objective.
