It's not a false economy, just a different emphasize due to the change in price structure. In the old days, memory were expensive, so we tried to economize its use. Today's memory are so cheap, that software developing time has become the most expensive part of a system.

- I wonder if they run veins of metal in between the layers to send the heat to radiator. - They put L3 cache on the second layer, which by virtue is quite removed from the logic circuits.

@akulkis It took special kind of programmer to bloat his software that much. Much of the bloats usually caused by graphics and sounds, that is, on the part of artists and designers side. But the code side of software creation usually only bloat a little if the programmer is lazy or scatter brained.

@geekswithfeet9137 Some motherboards already had cache (external) since x286 era. They even boasted how their motherboard blew their competition in speed comparison.

@Astroponicist It's not that old programmers were more disciplined. What shifting is emphasis. In my days, we only have 640Kb, thanks to Bill Gates arbitrary decision. So, we tried to save memory space as much as we could, otherwise our program would not run or run poorly. And don't forget the speed was not even 0.1% of today's low end computers. An unoptimized program will show its quality right away. Today's programmers have memory in terabyte. And they can do a lot of unoptimized thing in their programs and as long as the program does not freeze, the customers are none the wiser. The ease of having large memory means programmers start to emphasis of how fast they can make the program, even if it's bloated and unoptimized. For example, they will load the entire library to memory when they only need one function. Sure, they can weed those things out but it will be done in the next patch, if any.

So they finally figure out how to build high rise transistor piles. About time.
