@shadowdeslaar There are reasons why Roman shield are not a standard equipment in military. It's heavy, but more importantly, it cannot stop infantry rifle bullet. And ballista have range below the range of standard infantry rifle and mortar.

@shadowdeslaar Roman shield might be formidable by ancient standard, but it sure flimsy when it has to withstand modern firearms. Wait ... are you saying USMC don't know anything about survival? *amazed

@shadowdeslaar The thing is, USMC are well trained and they can land their mortar rounds on top of a moving testudo. Not 49 feet away. On top of it. From 2 miles away. And a stationary ballista. That will be a target practice for the most rookie among them.

@shadowdeslaar Those Roman soldiers sure have a hard day driving ballista into brush. Yeah, infantry spotters with their binoculars will see what they did and wait until they finish before send mortar round on it and open a can of beer. Flimsy shield is worse than no shield. Flimsy shield gives you a false sense on safety while in fact does nothing to improve your safety, and worse, prevents you from doing the actual thing that improve your safety, something like .. run away from incoming mortar round.
