  2.  opisex  Japan is a nuclear capable country. The only thing that kept Japan from having nuclear weapon are paperworks. Or as TIME magazine said, ".. one screwdriver twist away .."

  5.  @rhino1207  It depends on what kind of operation. A nuclear submarine can go very silent for very long time while still get 50% more speed than conventional subs. They only get noisy when they are at maximum speed.

  6. ​ @rhino1207  Some propose to use stirling submarine instead of diesel submarine for coastal patrols, since it's more silent, stay under water longer, and if they want to surface, they can do it on friendly port anyway. Both Japan and China have that kind of submarines. Note that nuclear submarine still have better performance on those criteria, with the drawback on the cost to have and to operate. US navy which mostly operates far away from base, only deploy nuclear submarine. I don't know whether their coastguard employ stirling, though.
