Have your French friend tried to sound any dissent to PPP? Then he would saw that it's not democracy. Singapore is like California today, a single party state. It's good when people in power is good, but it can easily turn bad when people in power is bad.

@omegabulldog5001 As I said, Lee Kuan Yew is an anomaly, not the rule. Of thousand times single party rule had been tried, only one gives good result. If you change your country to copy Singapore, you will have 99.9% chance of destroying your country.

@honeytgb If you do not want multi-party, then you are for single-party. That's implied ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ I'm from Indonesia, right next door to Singapore. Singapore is like Indonesia was when under Soeharto. It's not "single party state", because there are (for Indonesian, there were) opposition parties. But the opposition parties are castrated and closely monitored, every moves they made are hindered, law comes down hard on them and lenient to the ruling party. And of course, Indonesia was a joke back then. Lee Kuan Yew died a few years ago. His legacy will be eroded. To put it in analogy, most businesses can't survive their third generation, and Singapore will follow that route. Lee Kuan Yew was comfortable with just 70% votes for his party in the election, but newer generation pushed it to 90% zone, a clear tell tale of a growing dictatorship. For comparison, Soeharto also started with just 50+% but toward the end of his reign, he didn't tolerate anything below 90%, and of course his attitude was growing more and more dictatorial. As I said, if you want to copy Singapore, 99.9% chance you will end up with North Korea. And without effective opposition party, the third generation of Singaporean leaders will screw things up.

Lee Kuan Yew was once in thousands dictator, the dictator who actually didn't (excessively) enrich themselves. But to use him as an excuse to say that Singapore "democracy" is better than American's democracy is a joke. If you have somebody who is not Lee Kuan Yew but try to use Lee Kuan Yew approach to democracy, that's how you get Biden administration. Biden administration today is doing what Lee Kuan Yew (and his successors) did to democracy, i.e. wholesale suppression of dissenting voices. And that is an anomaly to American's democracy who rooted in tradition of acknowledging dissenting voices as a legitimate part of democracy.

@uwet.8826 It's because Biden's administration is an abomination. They want to suppress dissenting voices while still pretending to uphold democracy. Guess which government also suppressing dissent voices while pretending to be a democracy? Its name starts with s, ends with e, and 9 characters long.

@honeytgb Your chance with "one with honest people" is 0.1%. That's like winning the lottery, it's not a recipe to prosperity. I'd prefer dealing with two dishonest people at each other throat. The weaker one will usually do my bidding. Not always, but usually. We live in an imperfect world, trade offs will have to be made. edit, addition: If you live in the USA, this is the time you bargain hard with the Republicans. They are the current weaker party. As Matt Gaetz has shown, the status quo Republican was stunned when he actually made good his threat when they didn't listen to the dissenting voices. You may laugh at him for attacking his own party, but chances are the status quo Republican will listen carefully to his demand in the future. Go to the weaker party, and twist their arm. That's how you win against those damn politician.

@honeytgb You sound like people who several years ago praising how good China government is. Singapore is better than the US? For now, yes. But Singapore is outlier, not the rule. As I said, you dream about Singapore and you wake to North Korea. And don't forget there is a sign of growing dictatorship in Singapore with PPP leaders start to consider raising their electoral vote to 90%. So the "works way better than the US government" won't be last very long.

@honeytgb Sure, yes. There is a seed of dictatorship growing in USA today, but it will take longer to take root (compared to Singapore) because USA have so many checks and balances against it. For example, their 2nd amendment will send chill down the spine of wannabee USA dictators.

@skychaos87 As I said, it was just a Lee Kuan Yew phenomenon, one in a thousand leader that can deny himself from abusing his power. But in time, the system will become unsustainable. I doubt it will survive one hundred years, let alone two hundreds years as the USA does.
