@TheSunderingSea If you want backstabber of Christendom, you should point France who in the middle of Siege of Vienna marched their soldier to seize Luxembourg, and afterward refuse to join Holy League to drive Ottoman out of Europe. What Britain always wants was simple, they worked on the theory that any master of Europe will invade British Isle. So you can find them always in alliance with anyone who oppose the current strongest European state. They went against Louis XIV, Frederick II, Napoleon, Wilhelm II, Hitler .. all to prevent them from becoming master of Europe.

During the time there was a maxim that said those who rule Russia will rule Europe, and those who rule Europe will rule the world. Even the German during the first world war feared Russia so much that they decided to conquer France first so they will have ability to fight Russia. Of course they are mistaken because lagging technology and rampant corruption had turned Russia into paper tiger.
