  1. About the same time, Europe also experienced their own Great Clearance, where most of settlements were withdrawn several miles inland. The difference was, it wasn't decreed by any of the European monarch. Instead it's a spontaneous reaction to Ottoman funded Barbary pirates activity, who escalated their operation to rob and enslave people from Southern and Western European coasts.

  3. As in most of Europe (and the world), in the 19th century, the British also give command to their military based mostly on bloodlines. The practice didn't change much until the dawn of 20th century. So it's not quite different from what Qing did.
