Testing makes most sense when a community us trying for elimination but not when it's endemic. There's too much testing in Australia. More important is to monitor hospitalisation and test only symptomatic cases.
38
But where are the double blinded trial results? All I've seen so far are unsubstantiated claims and reports of toxicity. Would be interesting to see some solid data in support. Additionally, it seems vaccines cut deaths by close to 100% and unlike ivermectin, this is supported by widespread trials.
31
There has always been some focus on natural immunity but it's not a viable path to herd immunity in this pandemic because covid-19 is too deadly.
29
Gotta laugh at the level of idiocay in those night clubs. Perhaps laugh is the wrong word... maybe cry?
23
The medical profession is still learning about this novel disease.
16
And not only in America. We also have lazy selfish inconsiderate people who don't care... the antivaxx mob and the antimask mob and the anti-lockdown mob and people who wear their mask incorrectly (nose out, under chin, loose etc) and people who don't wash their hands etc. It's depressing.
16
Keep your guard up, it's not over yet (as we've now experiencing in Melbourne). One stray case handled poorly is all it takes to muck up.
15
@AddamSolo Why funny? Millions want the opportunity but will likely never get it.
15
I've always believed we would all get infected because the vaccines don't prevent infection. I don't think this is anything we didn't already know.
14
@bill9989 He didn't say "everybody". And yes, there are way too many idiots in this world.
14
Maybe use the Australian model... close state borders, police border crossings and impose heavy fines for breaches. It works. The heavy handed approach is necessary because too many people are selfish and stupid and won't do the right thing.
13
Nice report. On the positive side, the number of people in ICU in Melbourne is still lower than during the delta wave last October. Incredible given the daily case numbers.
13
@davidpietzsch2187 Masks don't work? So we may as well stop using masks in dental surgeries and operating theaters because they're useless, right? And you don't need science to prove that beyond any reasonable doubt that lockdowns work. We've been locking down cities and/or states in Australia since early 2020 and they always worked. Should be pretty obvious to everyone that community transmissions will fall when you prevent or reduce the number of interactions.
12
@timebong8366 Troll?
12
More delta scare mongering. This is less like science and more like media hype.
11
@mummys_boy_ That was stupid. Tell us how many millions have died from covid-19 vs deaths due to vaccinations? You have no idea, right? Stop your anti-vaxx BS, this channel is about science based reporting. Vaccinations are saving lives.
11
@jamesflaherty9250 Only an absolute fool would promote international tourism at the cost of lives and health of their own citizens. The tourism industry will bounce back when the time is right but that time is not now. We don't want thousand of infected travelers spreading disease in our communities.
11
Hi from Melbourne
11
There are a lot of conspiracy theory idiots out there who actually believe everything related to the pandemic is a huge ploy to bring in some kind of dystopia. Vaccines, 5G, Bill Gates, masks, lockdowns. They're anti pretty much anything designed to help, so it goes without saying that they're going to troll this channel.
11
@Kate NZ has the advantage on one controlling government chamber I.e. no states, no upper house. It can develop and implement goals in a much more efficient manner across the whole country.
11
I fail to understand why governments delay inevitable lockdowns until the death toll gets out of hand. Why not lock down hard and early? Less economic damage, less disease and less death. Australia did it pretty well.
10
The new naming convention for variants is probably down to woke madness. Using place names is probably considered racist or something similarly nonsensical.
10
Ending trials early is a good idea for many reasons, most of which have been discussed on this channel.
10
People have been considering for a year. Problem was the lack of evidence.
10
I've had an awefull lot of trouble with teeth and gums. I've had eleven molars crowned and a whole lot of other issues. My dentist told me the best mouthwash is warm salty water. I've since been rinsing twice daily for 3 years now and have notice a remarkable improvement in the gums. Just my experience. Others may differ.
9
@Noclaf555 You got that right. It shocks me that so many tinfoil hat wearing conspiratorial fools are here spreading bs on a science based educational channel.
8
Our Austtalian health experts say the delta variant is 1.6x as infectious. I doubt anyone really knows with any certainty. People were referring to it as "terrifying" and a "beast" and saying how it could be transferred between complete strangers.... yeah, like the other variants. Too.much hype. Too much scare mongering.
8
@tomjohnson4681 Sars-cov-2 is the virus. Covid-19 is the disease. What's your problem?
8
@bootburner4544 That's because no one, I repeat no one knows how many other cases are out in the community. Waiting a week or a month to lock down would only increase the rish of a bigger wave and a longer lock down. It's not rocket science.
8
Perfectly understandable. I avoid anyone not wearing a mask. People need to show some respect for the welfare of others around them and wearing a mask is one way to do it. Trouble is the world is too full of selfish people for whom it's all about me me me.
8
@OceanFrontVilla3 Hopefully, eventually, but still too soon to revert to normal, else there'll be another massive wave of infections.
8
Doctors do test for vitimin D. I've had mine tested multiple times and was very low (14.5). I never spend time in the sun. My wife also. We both take supplements.
8
Calculating the so called "transmisiblity" by comparing the way variants out perform each other is nonsensical because you'll end up with R0 values that are clearly wrong.
7
Because there is no evidence to support it's widespread use. It's still effectively quack medicine when not used for what it was designed for. Anecdotal evidence is not science.
7
@jerrygarcia4390 This guy thinks tourism is more important than keeping people healthy and alive. Anyone who believes tourism is more important than people's health must have lost their humanity. It's disgusting. There were too many people flying around for no good reason anyway.
7
@jc77f Two years in and you're still calling covid-19 an exaggerated flu? That was stupid. And that 98% figure hides the true danger of covid-19 including long covid and permanent organ damage. And we have no idea about what's coming next. This will be with us for years.
7
@fernandodimeo7419 Yes, approved and passed safety trials. 1.5 billions vaccinations so far globally and looking good.
7
Investigative Audit I noticed you've got one on Gates. Don't see anything wrong with funding the WHO or any other agency focussing on health or pandemic issues. Haven't watched it yet though. TBH, I've become weary of investing my time searching out new sources on social media as more and more people are pushing far right tinfoil hat conspiratorial nonsense.
7
So does not being vaccinated. Saving lives within the most vulnerable groups has to be the priority initially. Pretty sure he would be aware of the various trade offs.
7
I doubt it. I don't see how a relativelly small quantity of an ineffective drug would do much? The evidence supporting Ivermectin is even weaker now than it was last week since the withdrawal of one of the more 'positive' trial papers due to alledged fraud. More likely, as the outbreak spreads out of cities, reporting will have fallen off. We're just not hearing about it. I know this is happening in the Philippines for instance. People is very poor communities suffer and die in silence.
7
@1984IsHere Excess deaths have been looked at and the figures correlate roughly with what would be expected based on reported covid deaths (where accurate records are kept). And stop lying about vaccines. Your misinformation could lead to someone's death. Think before you write.
6
This is pretty much what my government did in Australia. Closed the borders except for essential travellers. Airlines were largely grounded. Anyone entering the country must quarantine for two weeks in a secure facility.
6
@richardefriend It has nothing to do with big pharma. Ivermectin is already cheap and readily available. It's more about the lack of evidence in support of it's efficacy, safety and dosage.
6
Will Thomson Not everyone wants to be out in the sun. I hate it. It's not that simple. It also depends on climate. Too bloody hot where I live.
6
This nurse is not a reliable source of information. Been wrong too often. Before mocking the BBC article, he should pay a little more attention to his own.
6
It could take months for a number of reasons. Based on what I've read.... a new variant is dominating. Most have recieved only the first dose with efficacy reported to be around 50%. it takes a month to build immunity so there is a lag. They need 80% immunized with 2 doses for herd immunity, currently around 20% with one dose.
6
The immune response is broader than that. That's why the vaccines are effective against other variants, albeit not as effective.
6
Not failed. They're working on it.
6
Same. I also had low levels.
6
Yes, our governments in Australia have done a pretty good job on balance with only the occasional misstep, mostly on Victoria. But there are those who moan about the restrictions, not realizing how damn fortunate they are to be here.
