It's simple. If everyone would wear masks (strictly enforced, no exceptions) then the R value would fall below 1.0. Problem is people refuse to follow rules. Vaccines don't require strict daily adherence, so the effect is more predictable.

@z0770z It's worked pretty well for us in Australia. Most people are working and our hospitals are not overloaded with covid cases.

@daverok1113 That's not the truth. Apparently the Oxford vaccine (which will reduce disease save lives) will be manufactured in my city and will available at a cost of around $3 per dose but fully subsidized by our government, so where's the greed in that? I would argue the $3 to save a life is extremely cheap. The manufacture has to pay wages, taxes, setup costs and a bunch of other expenses.
