I've been turning mine off every night for the past 28 years. Not had any problems. Makes no sense having a PC running all night while sleeping.

I have roughly 80,000 emails in my gmail folders... how would you suggest I sort through that lot? Gmail doesn't provide any convenient way to search, filter cleanup, etc. I couldn't keep up, so I gave up trying.

Excellent presentation. Luckely fo me, I don't use the MS folders for storing anything important. I consider, downloads, documents, pictures etc. to be temp folders.

I do the same. I dont trust any form of online backup. I want full control over my backups, which I have automated with my own software.

I agree with local storage but I would avoid thumb drives. They have a habit of suddenly dying.

I don't even know what google drive is, and I don't like online storage anyway. I would love to be able to download my mail and/or be able to delete old mail that I without going one by one.

I upgraded to Windows 11 a while back simply because I've never liked 10. It's ugly. Windows 11 just looks a lot nicer. It's the best since Windows 7.

What do you mean by Germany not using Microsoft? They'll still use it. I think it's just government. I worked for a company that switched to Linux. Didn't go well. Lasted less than a year.

Either stay with Windows 10, or switch to Windows 11. For those people with very old hardware, there are some workarounds (reportedly). Some people have Windows 11 running on the original i5 CPUs. But sooner or later, technology moves on, and backward compatibility has to take 2nd place. I mean, how many people are still running those old IDE cabled hard drives or a ps2 mouse or anything else that old? Anyone overly concerned with security could probably install 3rd party software. Or if you like self inflicted pain, try Linux.

@driver288 I will never allow my files to be taken over by any cloud service. Many corporates do it to save money or to avoid hiring their own IT staff. I simply don't trust OneDrive in any way. I won't put my important files online under any 3rd party control, including Github. To that end, I maintain multiple backups across multpile drives (internal and external). Ive even developed my own backup software to automate the process. I take the same approach with everything, videos, installers, source code, whatever. Everything of value has an offline backup. And guess what, colleagues have often come to me for files that I've backed up and they've lost. Why? Because they know I'm the paranoid one who backs up everything of value. To hell with the cloud. Rant over :)

Why?

Fine if you have time and the patience to do it. I have ten's of thousand's dating back to when gmail was launched. I was receiving hundreds on some days. I fell behind around 15 years ago, lol. I've wanted a way to download and deal with it locally, but I'm totally clueless on anything like that.

I tried Linux a few years ago. Didn't like it. Switched back to Windows and never looked back.

Windows is good. Just no need to use OneDrive. Why throw away an OS over one service?

Very interesting but it sadly went right over my head. This is an area of IT that I struggle to understand. This and pretty much everything related to how the web works... IPs, ports, end points, URLs, TCP, etc.

I refuse to use OneDrive. I don't understand why anyone would use it.

@hopelessdecoy I never see adds. I have the so called "data mining" disabled. The whole MS is spying thing is over hyped scaremongering. Not that I care. Linux does not provide alternatives, at least not for me. Who has old hardware lying around anyway, and who'd want to use it for anything that requires serious performance?
1
@hopelessdecoy No offense intended but most of your points are moot fanboy stuff. If Linux was really that good and easy to switch to, then Linux wouldn't be languishing at 3% deskop uptake, especially given that it's free.
1
Just don't use it.
