  4. ​@RustIsWinning It's not unsafe if it has been proven safe. Perhaps you don't realise that all languages boil down to assembly code at the bottom, and assembly is unsafe. Rust might be considered safe. Why? Because the implementation has features that enforce "safety" rules. The same enforcement can be built into a C application. The difference is in where and how those rules are enforced, but it can be done.

  5. ​​ @SpeakChinglish Move to a new language yet to be created that does what js does but does it well. JS is a hacked together language adopted accidentally in a hurry, and it's a curse. Learn from the mistake that is JS.

  8. C++ is a great language that produces high-performance code. I don't understand the hate. The language I hate the most is java... and the whole java ecosystem and tools.

  9. For me, 1% CLI is too much. I'm pushing for cliser to zero. When I design an application, the UI supports all functionality. CLIs are so 1990s.

  10. Nothing comes close to MS Visual studio's debugging features. That's where Linux sucks. No decent IDE for C++. Actually, no decent IDE for any of languages I've tried. Your complaints about vectors and realication etc. That's just bad programming. A skill issue.

  11. LeetCode has a bunch of fun challenges that can make you think outside of the box. That's why I like. I wouldn't consider it a way to find employment.

  12. C++ is great. I love C++. It's the best programming language I've used in 35 years of programming, and I've used many. C and Pascal would be 2nd and 3rd place.

  13.  @Mallchad  That's got to be an edge case, right? I've been developing a Windows C++ developer for 30 years and I've never had to "throw up an executable and start debugging". I'm not even sure what that means. And "block input"... what's that about? If you need a solution, VS will create one. I've never needed to hand code one. And once you have one, its super convenient going forward, and it beats the crap one needs to go through with other sub-par IDEs. As a test, I've just opened a solution in VS 2022, and it took no more than 3 secs. Not sure where your "massive waste of time" happens?

  14. I don't understand the C++ hate. C++ is an awesome language. C++ has stould the test of time and proven itself to be the best in class. Those pushing for C++ to be replaced have been deluded by the "it's not safe" lobby. It's a skill issue.

  15. I love C++. It has been my language of choice for 30 years. I've taken a look at rust because the fans tell us C++ developers how bad and how "dangerous" C++ is. So I took a look and thought it looked like crap. The syntax omg. Why? Oh, and Java is shitty. I prefer to build native apps. None of this JVM or .NET nonsense.

  16. I'm fully confident that my C++ won't combust. The language has stould the test if time. I've been writing C++ code for 28 years without anything combusting. I'm tring to learn some of the rust basics because curious. OMG. It's a nightmare.

  17. They all do much the same thing at mid to low level, and C and C++ are as capable now as they were 30 years ago. Actually, more so. Throwing a new language at stable code is worse than pointless in my opinion.

  18. The other problem with Rust is that it's awful for demonstrating general concepts due to its insane syntax and senantic rules. One of the reasons Pascal was used a lot in academia. It's simpke and self documenting.

  22. Java code is hard to follow, especially given that most of what I've seen is too heavily encapsulated oop wise. Like drill 20 levels deep to find 3 lines of code, then back up 10 levels to the next call, and down again. Looking at C code is so refreshing after fighting with that stuff.

  24. The guy criticising inheritence is basically presenting a strawman. He comes up with a bad design and blames inheritance for his problems. Use the right tools for the job and use the tools correctly. You can use a hammer to drive a screw but a screwdriver is better. Inheritance is good for some things but not for all things.

  27. C is not chaos or anarchy. C is a language that might permit chaos, but on its own, it does nothing. Some developers are creating chaos. I don't accept that as a good reason to dump a language.

  28. Doing it from scratch is a great learning process. I wrote a pacman clone and an arkanoid clone in assembly back in the 80s. Neither were released. Being clones, there could have been problems, plus I wasn't any good at sound effects. Back in those days, there were no engines. We just took over the whole machine. It was really just a passion project to learn how games worked.

Yes, if people want to donate their to a comminity, nothing wrong with that, but do we expect free food, free shoes, houses, cars, electricity, gas, should we expect free music downloads, free movies? Why is software any different? Yet we've come to expect it.

  37. Any who does notice the difference clearly knows very little about computers, and likely has very simple use cases, just uses a familiar application or a web browser. I am a Windows C++ application developer of 30 years. I would notice the difference. The first being that I can no longer do my job.

  41. Various CPUs have various instructions for shifting.... arithmetic shift versus logical shift. Some look at it as shift vs. rotate. The latter would cause a rap around. An arithmetic shift on a signed value would maintain the signed status.

  43. What do you mean by no build tool with C++? You mean none on Linux? MS Visual Studio does builds, and it's way better than messing around with rust in VS Code. Been using it for 25 years for building commercial C++ applications. I converted my prime sieve benchmark to rust... what an f'ing nightmare. In any case, the rust version ran 12% slower and 10x harder to write. I susoect the speed difference is due to LLVM which I've discovered is 12% slower than MSVC across a bunch of tests.

  45. ​ @ImperiumLibertas It might be a great editor, but that's only covering 1% of a developer's day. 99% is doing other stuff (that Vim can't do). It's akin to optimising too early. Jumping through hoops cut a ms of the execution time of a process that runs for 10 minutes.

  49. I hate java with a vengence. I've used many languages over the past 35 years, including assember, BASIC, LISP, Pascal, C, C++, Ada. I even learned COBOL. But 95% of it has been C++ development. Java is the worst language/dev environment I've ever enountered. Eclipse is especially bad. Total garbage. The worst thing is I need to use it for work going forward. But 20 years of tutorials and courses and struggles and whatever has left me sweating. Java really sucks. It's one of the hardest languages to learn, in my opinion.

  50. Same for me... 6502 and 68000. I still prefer lower level coding. Most of my work is with lagacy C code and C++
