Kind of but not entirely... I doubt that every user knows how the Linux kernel works and is a skilled C developer? Short of that, Windows is little different. I've been a Windows application developer for 30 years. I know how a lot of stuff works, but I don't want to know how Linux works. It's useless for my work. And that's the thing... most people will gain nothing but headaches from attempting to switch and gain no benefit from doing so. Yeah, I was one of those kids who took everything apart, but sometimes life becomes noticeably too short to spend yet more years learning something unnecessarily.

I have a function containing only a 1500 line switch statement in my project. It's fine. It works.

@bariole Not compiling to native code is already a showstopper for me, and that's ignoring a bunch of other negatives.

Software development is a huge and diverse field. I could answer questions about compiler design or assembly language or C++ development or Lisp, but I'm clueless on anything related to networking or Web development or java. I wouldn't be able to do "Hello World" in html, let alone anything deeper. I see a kind of mocking of people that can't answer x or y... perhaps they know a bunch of other stuff etc.

Not really.

I'm one of those people who can't keep up. I'm pretty good at what I've been doing. Same company for 20 years. I hate what I need to do now. It sucks.

Error reporting is not the most important part of a language. Some of the C++ template error messages sure can be confusing, but I believe this is outweighed by the language positives. As for Rust.. yes, the error reporting is worse than C++, as is the weird syntax and unintuative semantics.

Big (O) is not broken. You have to understand the constant component. And which time complexty is appropriate and which conditions. But yes, modern hardware has made that goal more difficult.

Not really.

Nope.

I touch Rust and got my fingers burned, metaphorically. I'm not going back for more. It was painful.

Is that a C++ problem or an Android problem? I have all sorts of problems building C++ code developed on Linux, but few with code developed on Windows. I think a lot of the problems I've encountered are due to the original development environments.

The typical java example is likely worse based on my experience.
1
That's not a win for java. That's a flawed argument.

I love that C# is beating Java.

I started coding in my teens as a hobby, but I started professionally at age 40.

LOL, NO

Not really, and I don't understand why folk hate optimisations. I love them. There are real-world applications that require as much speed as can be thrown at them. I've spent the past 20 years working on such products. It's not all about servers. A lot of high-performance applications do run in isolation. They need to. SSDs are not an optimisation, so that's moot. You don't compensate for poor optimisation by buying faster hardware. Because there, you're not maximising potential. But Im not into developing bloatware, so there's that.

Which language requires that you re-learn 30% every year?

The case statements should be indented. Why would you want the outer block aligned with the case statements?

Is a rotten apple better than a rotten orange?

@IQof2 Lol, not likely. I've just installed Linux on a VM because Linux fans keep telling me it's great. Well, it wasn't great five years ago when our IT dept. installed it as a cost saver. Anyway, I installed it (Linux Mint)... and TBH, it seems toy like. It doesn't even handle the basics, like remembering screen settings. The only thing it might be useful for is web browsing. Anyway, back to Windows, I went.

I've been developing in C and C++ for 30 years. Trying to learn java for the past decade and getting nowhere with it is blowing my mind in a very bad way. It sucks.

@sivan_j Speak for yourself. I haven't encountered any such problems with C or C++ 😀
