I own my computer. It's running Windows 11, but I own it. And before Linux fandboy rants about telemetry, I've turned of a bunch of stuff simply because I could, but after that, I dont give a toss. Every service prover collects infornation nowadays. You're not that important. No company cares about what you do or what I do down to clicks and key strokes.

Don't get too excited. As long as MS is in the desktop OS game, it will dominate. I would hate to be forced onto Linux. It still lacks good development tools. Tried to use Linux a few times. It sucked. Well, it sucked when I eventually got a working system. First attempts failed at installation. My son likes it, but not for me. He hammers away on the terminal quite happily. I started using GUIs in 1986 and never looked back.

The fractured nature of Linux is also one of its major flaws. Think about it. Its one of the reasons I'm not interest in trying Linux again. I want to be developing for the mainstream market. Additionally, Linux users seem to expect everything for free. We have to pay for clothing, shoes, food, rent, property, utilities, the computer hardware... why should the software be free?

@terrydaktyllus1320 To take that car analogy further, Linux is like the cheap car that has its hood up every Saturday morning because the owner is a cheapskate and wont pay $ so he spends his spare time tinkering and fixing it himself. Most car drivers dont want that. Most computer users dont want that.

@fredmckinney8933 Mainly because Linux is a small hobby target. Why try to break into Linux when there are 20x more Windows systems out there to target. Permissions can be applied to Windows files and folders anyway, so it's moot.

@benygh911 Why does it need to be lean? Short of memory? Dish drive full?
