One analogy... if computers were cars, Linux drivers would have to be car mechanics.

Not really. I just never had any problems to solve. I just installed the OS and used it. It's quite intuitive. There was no need to ever touch a terminal. Done so numerous times without issues... W95, 98, MT4.0, W2000, XP, W7, W10, W11. Linux was a whole difference experience. Just problems and failures. Never did get any distro to install and run on any hardware. The only Linux systems I've used were installed by our IT specialist. That's not the experience Windows users want to face. They typically don't want to notice the OS. It should be intuitive. Everything should just work. A good GUI is self-documenting.

Android sucks. I hate them, but Android phones are cheaper.

I've never succeeded in getting Linux to instal and run ever. I have used systems installed by others, but it never worked for me. The worst part if using Linux at work was the instability and randomly losing work during a freeze or crash. We only used it for a year before switching back to Windows. Most folk didn't like it. I also don't like installing from websites. I prefer how most Windows software is installed by standalone msi installers. And I keep the installers backed up for later offline use.

That's not true. I've installed Windows 10 and Windows 11 and not had to install any drivers. Windows installed default drivers for everything that work without issue. Linux is the OS with driver problems.

@cyberbillp That's total bs.

@零云-u7e I don't understand the Windows 11 hate? I like it better than Windows 8/8.1 and 10. W7 was my favourite, but 11 us a move in the right direction in terms of the UI look and feel.

@cyberbillp I've had no problems getting old stuff running. I have apps I compiled in the late 90s that run on Windows 11, as do my 12 year old laser printers.

I don't see how you're any more free? Both Windows and Linux do similar things except that Windows does most things with a little more polish and with a bigger range of software. I've been using Windows since 1996 and at no time did I sense a lack of freedom. I guess it depends on what one values. Computers to me is just a tool.

I discovered that Linux sucks. That's why I don't use it. It had nothing to do with the Dunning-Kruger effect. Windows just works better. It has a nicer GUI, is easier to use, is more polished, and provides better C++ development tools. The only thing lacking is an equivalent to valgrind. And I don't care about the "bloat" and "spyware" scaremongering. I've had no problems with Windows updates and very few stability issues (only Windows 98). No problems since switching to Windows 2000. Linux was the complete opposite. Frustrating and disappointing. Linux is just more difficult than Windows. I can remember "learning" Windows 95. I can remember "learning" the original Mac. I can remember "learning" the Amiga desktop. None of these were difficult. But Linux is difficult. It seems to have been developed by developers for developers.

Good point about the command line. I would never touch it by choice and I never need to as a home user, nor should I be forced to. This is 2024. My Amiga in 1986 already ran a decent preemptive multitasking OS with a GUI. That's almost 40 years ago. Mac the same. Not preemptive, but the GUI was pretty good from.the get go. The main reason the terminal is so needed in Linux is that the GUI devs are lazy. Easier to just fall back to the terminal than to implement the functionality I the GUI. That's one of the many reasons why I will not use Linux.
