Cost is unavoidable in a disaster. With no vaccines and no effective treatments, there was always going to be significant cost, in monetary and health terns. The hard part is finding a balance. How much death and disease is ethical given most most of it is avoidable? Too many countries got it wrong. The US being an obvious example of failure. The US heading for a million dead over coming months and unimaginable needless suffering - that's shameful. It's no different than flood, fire, storm or earthquake... there is cost, there is damage, there is injury, there is death. No way cost can be avoided. Given the death toll in Australia is minuscule by international standards, I applaud our governments for a job well done, and done under difficult circumstances.
