Bear in mind that Ireland had just been through a bloody civil war just like Spain. Neither country could risk reopening domestic hostilities. Try to be less jingoistic and show some appreciation of history.

I have believed since the beginning of Sir Keir Starmer's election as Leader of New Labour that come the election people should vote strategically by choosing the top vote-getter next in line from the last election rather than voicing now a blanket endorsement of a particular party which is one way to waste a vote. I used to be loyal to a party before I realized I was a socialist. Now, I think it is best to go for an individual who can keep out either the Tories or New Labour. For example, if I lived in St Ives I would be in a Conservative seat represented by Derek Thomas with a majority of 4,280. The person to vote for would be the one who came 2nd who was Andrew George of the Liberal Democrats. Labour came 3rd. It would be a bad mistake to join the Green Party, for e.g. because their candidate, Ian Flindall, who managed to get less than 2% of the vote as against 41% for the Liberals who last held the seat in 2010. The choice is clear. The Liberals can take the seat.

He would not have said the word "mandate" so often if he really thought he had one but he knows he can get away with this because the British people will believe him and all his ministers who have been told to mention the word mandate in every sentence when being interviewed. At least we are being spared the self-destructed Jonathan Ashworth who would have been impossible to avoid on tv and radio repeating the word mandate. But getting only a third share of the vote in any other country which has a democracy would not constitute having even a weak mandate.

While I support Palestinian freedom and I condemn the geno@ide in Palestine, I believe there is another more plusable motive for the arrest of the French police at the Pater Noster Church than the decision of the French government to stop sending armaments to the I@realis after more than a year of death. Rather, when the French informed the I@realis that their foreign minister intended to visit the church, they made a security sweep of the property, naturally, and found two men who claimed to be gendarmes although they wore no uniforms (no familiar kepis) and no identification documents! The I@realis remained at the site to provide security for the French politician and they were persuaded to release the two men who were calling themselves gendarmes. This looks like a storm in a teacup. The French are already participants in geno@ide no matter what the do now.
