Some of us living in European Union countries never supposed Russia intended to invade and conquer Ukraine if only because Putin stood by year-after-year while ethnic-Russian Ukrainian families took a merciless beating from the fascist Azov Battalion for eight long years and did nothing except turn a blind eye to piecemeal irregular support by Russian volunteers surreptitiously crossing the border as volunteers helping the people of the Donbas region, culminating in the criminal downing a Malaysian civilian passenger airliner full of Dutch children and their families on a holiday trip to the Far East before retreating back across the border with their tails between their legs. We wondered what was taking the Russian leadership so long so long in coming to the aid of their defenseless kith and kin. This was not the attitude of a country with design on territorial expansion.

We didn't have the USA before 1776 so why should it exist now? Heck, Ireland was not a country until 1949 so why recognize it now? . . . Brilliant argument! Only one thumb up? You people!

@danutahanyga4834 Your response is too long and you missed my point. I did not write about the USA only and the reason I mentioned Ireland becoming a country as late as 1949 was to reinforce my point that countries come and go. The idiotic suggestion that because a country did not exist at one time it cannot be recognized as one today was what I argued against.

@zetristan4525 It is true that there are several ethnic entities in Ukraine which must account for those majority Ukrainians who are ignorant and feel left behind to gravitate toward a nationalism that beats down significant minorities beginning with the Ukrainian Russians, followed by a hatred of Ukrainian Poles, then Ukrainian Hungarians, followed by Ukrainian Romanians, etc., etc.

@grahamhireme9283 I was referring to the declaration of Ireland as a republic in 1949 and ceasing to be The Irish Free State which had been in the British Commonwealth.

@cheekychews You must be using information from the investigative independent reporters of TACC. I try to get both sides of a story before I make a decision. It requires a bit of effort but worth it. The answer is the same to both your questions; None. There was no advantage to the Donbas fighters or to the Russian Federation by killing all the Dutch families and others on MH17 and neither was there an advantage to the Kiev regime except their people were innocent of shooting down the aircraft and the other side appeared like monsters. In the propaganda war the Russians and Donbas fighters look to be the baddies. You give me the impression that the propaganda trumps truth because it is by your appeal to propaganda that you argue. I don't. I do believe it was similar to the downing of the IL76 aircraft killing 65 Ukrainian POWs by the Kiev troops. They were both unintended targets and it is a waste of time getting into arguments about whose propaganda people find persuasive because it changes nothing.

@cheekychews I'm sorry; what is pathetic or who is pathetic and why so? I am unclear of your argument. I wonder whether you accept only pro-Russian facts as well as Russian government propaganda and reject all facts as well as obvious propaganda from the Kiev government. You do understand what propaganda is. Right? I'm just unclear what exactly you find to be pathetic.

@joe_ninety_one5076 I see it differently from you and Prigozhin. You are mistaken to describe the eight years of attacks on the ethnic-Russians of eastern Ukraine as All Quiet On The Eastern Front. Eight years is not to be sniffed at and nothing is to be gained for us to be rehashing the arguments on both sides. The fighting was so intense that the time between 2014 and 2022 is called the Donbas War which settles the matter for me. It was an 8-years war. Minimizing the conflict by producing small numbers of deaths is not helpful. You prefer to side with the Kiev government's propaganda which you are free to do but quoting a mercenary who led a private army and even threatened Vladimir Putin with a march on Moscow might indicate what he thought was the situation but he is dead now and others had a different take on events. The Russian special military operation beginning in 2022 did not happen in a vacuum. There was a lead up to it of 8 years during which fascist elements such as the Azov Brigade sought to dominate and kill eastern Ukrainian citizens instead of coming to an accomodation made more difficult by the illegal Kiev coup to be sure. Kiev were wrong-headed to release the devotees of the Waffen-𐌔𐌔 to run rampant. By doing so, they lost the east which looked toward Russia anyway. Forgive me if my reply was too long.

@joe_ninety_one5076 Nothing you write sounds true but instead a lot of western propaganda. Sorry. Your post is too long for me to address everything you wrote and I would have to do homework to expose all your fallacies. You have several value judgements which are hard to dismiss but instead are opinions. For example, you say that "Putin likes nazis" and you qualify this by saying "as long as they are his nazis". This is your opinion and sounds nonsensical. Nazis were originally German nationalists and they ceased their existence when the Red Army defeated the Germans in 1945. There haven't been any Nazis since although Ukrainian nationalists nowadays have picked up where the Banderaists who collaborated with the Nazis during WWII left off. Many of these original Ukrainian nationalists were welcomed into Canada and that was the end of them. Today the Azov Battalion dress like these former Nazi sympathizers and use their insignia and speak as Ukrainian nationalists who hate their Russian Ukrainian citizens in the Donbas. These are called Nazis by Putin but they are not Nazis because a pre-requisite for being a Nazi is to be Aryan not Slav who were considered Untermensch by the Aryan Germans. Putin is a Slav. The Nazis invaded his Motherland and he cannot abide them.

@uglaegilsdottir The United States does not recognize the new republics of Donetsk and Lugansk as a means of hurting Russia and to maintain their propaganda that these breakaway states rightfully belong to Ukraine. This is to be expected but, in reality, these republics will not be returned to Ukraine in the foreseeable future if at all. This is a common strategy. You will recall how the German Democratic Republic was not recognized when the Bundesrepublik of West Germany was established. Schoolchildren in the West learned that East Germany was merely a puppet state of the Soviets. It is a way of delegitimizing countries.

@danutahanyga4834 I can see you have your mind made up and you are sticking to notions which no-one else agrees to. Perhaps someone, a teacher perhaps, put motions in your head or maybe you read it somewhere but allow me to say I never heard such ideas as yours about how the very recent development of nation states came about in Europe. I confess I am not sure what point you are trying to make. If you mean Ukraine is not a country because it has more than one ethnic group then I cannot agree. I'm sorry but I'm lost in your argument.

@danutahanyga4834 Nation states are relatively new on our planet. Most were not "forged", as you say, but were decided by what came before nation states, namely, empires which drew up countries' borders regardless of the different nations or ethnicities. The process is still happening as I type and resolving border disputes is causing wars and dissention all over our planet. You guessed incorrectly where I am from. I am in Spain which is not a nation state. Here we have broadly four nations in one country: Spanish, Catalan, Bascos, and Galicians. Each has its own history and unique language. This contradicts what you define as a nation state forging its own identity. The same can be said of many states or countries which have different nationalities. Belgium has two nations: the Flamisch (Dutch speakers) and the Walloon (French speakers). Switzerland has four distinct nations: French, Italian, German, and Roma. I could go on. As for Ukraine, there are several nations there: Ukrainian, Russian, Polish, Hungarians, Romanians, and Lithuanians. France is considered the first nation state which began about 1800. So, you see it is a new idea or fact. In Africa it is all mixed up as the imperial powers drew borders that went through tribal territories. You see, it is not as simple as you think.

I do not know where I am guilty of wishful thinking, for example. I do not understand what exactly has been part of the history curriculum at your university for decades. You appear to dismiss the standard of history as taught in English-speaking countries such as Oxford and Cambridge in England, Stanford and Yale in the USA, the Australian National University and the University of Sydney in Australia, the University of Toronto and the University of British Columbia in Canada, to name but a few world renowned institutions. Forgive me for saying so but you do make yourself sound like an ass.

@danutahanyga4834 You are the one who is mistaken. Might I advise you not to visit Barcelona and be heard denying that the Catalans are a nation. There are several nations or ethnicities (same thing) in Spain. It is the same in Belgium, as I mentioned and in the United Kingdom there are four nations. Next you will be saying the Scots are not a nation. Ha!
