This is the consequence of everyone's habitually defending themselves against virtue attacks. You cannot successfully defend yourself from such attacks, only prostrate yourself to the virtue police. The question we should be asking is not if its true,, but does it even matter if it is? If there is no evidence that it were anything but a singular youthful indiscretion, then does it still matter? Adolescents learn about everything in life, by pushing boundaries until they push back. EVERY psych PhD knows this, BTW (Im a MA in Clinical Psych). Theres a reason juvenile records are sealed and 16 year olds cant vote or carry guns. Its because adolescents are biologically incapable of controlling their emotions and 'urges', having to learn appropriate behavior, by boundary testing. For that reason, we recognize that mistakes of youth should not limit an individual's future.
This goes for any virtue attack. Take for example, the standard 'RACIST!!!' attack. When someone calls me racist, to win an argument, I dont grovel to be believed that Im not a racist. Rather, I challenge my accuser to provide one solitary objective fact, that racism is wrong. If being a racist is so bad that it invalidates any position I may hold; if a political platform relies upon painting an opponent as 'racist', then there should be at least one fact available to support that standard (spoiler: there never is). Make no mistake, this is a virtue attack, not a criminal allegation. The alleged incident was neither important enough for her to pursue, in service of Justice, nor did she feel the 'Civic responsibility' to protect all the unsuspecting women of the world, from this dangerous person. The incident was not a concern for her, until she found it of utility in marriage counseling more than 30 years after the fact. Im predicting that when we learn more about her and her personal politics come to light, we will be unsurprised.
