  1. Short version. A) Ukraine possessed nuclear weapons they couldn't activate or control and B) they didn't 'give up' anything, they sold them back to Russia, for economic benefit. The single most salient fact people need to get their heads around, is Ukraine's borders were decided by Russia; and Ukraine exists at Russia's leisure. Ukraine did not earn independence, it was released by a parent state that no longer wanted to support it. This should never be forgotten or dismissed by those parroting talking points about '1991 borders', or 'giving up nuclear weapons' for fictitious 'security agreements'.
