Thomas Headley
But what does this have to do with criticizing the President's misidentification of a specific firearm? The point being that he does not claim to be a firearms expert in the first place. Furthermore, the high likelihood is that he simply employed the same tactic as the gun alarmists and used a purposefully hyperbolic term, to press home to the ant-gun media, how absurdly disproportionate it was, to any reasonably potential threat.
The issue of 'overwhelming force' is political and administrative. Direct action units are extremely expensive to maintain, for the one or two incidents per budget year that they are actually needed. Thus, to justify their expense to the taxpayers, depts began using them for common LE operations. This frequent and gratuitous usage and the post 9/1, DHS porkbarrel, has shifted the paradigm and has created a self fullfilling need, whereby anyone who made a request, was granted Federal money and equipment to maintain these units and every budget cycle requires request for equal or greater funds, lest they be sent to the back of the line, where they cant get it when they do need it.
