Boxing is a superior discipline, because it teaches the single most important factor in self-defense - taking a beating. The overwhelming majority of defensive scenarios take place in what we call the 'hole', where your first indication of a threat, is being assaulted/restrained. This is your initial point for whatever technique you're going to employ. Above all and back to taking a beating, sometimes the right thing to do is simply endure it. You don't win anything in defense. The best case scenario is you get to keep what you had. If 'winning' ever enters your mind, its not self-defense, its a fight and fighting is expensive.
