  1. Our revolution and civil war were exceptions, because America had neither. America had a successful war for independence and an unsuccessful war for independence. In neither case, did the insurgent seek to overthrow or replace the existing system of rule. Rather, they wanted to opt out of it. That is how we managed to forego the follow-on dictatorships and purges.
