@IGotSoupProductions Well, the thing is Van Halen wasn't that technical, nor was he especially 'skilled' (kinda sloppy, really). Most beginners quickly develop the technical skills to play most Van Halen stuff. But, you can play all the right notes, in the right place and it will be unrecognizable. What he had was expression; the timing and accents. When he did become more technically proficient, is when Van Halen started getting boring and predictable.

@IGotSoupProductions I have a correct view of technical proficiency. An analogy might be that being expert with a hammer, doesnt make you an architect. Expression is completely separate and unrelated to technical expertise. There are people who can blow your mind with one string, but don't know a single chord. And there are people who can seamlessly run every note on the board, but can't make you care. One has nothing to do with the other. In EVH's case, his expressivity greatly outstripped his skill as an operator. As I said, early VH is standard beginner material, but just playing the notes, you see how uninteresting it really is. Thats why two bands you do not try to cover, are VH and Metallica.

@IGotSoupProductions Fundamentals, fundamentals, fundamentals. He invented none of those techniques, so Im not sure what argument you're attempting to make, except possibly to obfuscate with technobabble. I've been playing for 30+ years(not so proficiently since a catastrophic hand injury); and a graduate of HSPVA. Im not an immature musician. I just know the difference between wielding a tool and building; between technician and a musician.

@PushServer He wasn't that great of a guitarist, but an outstanding musician. I know, I know, I always get hate for saying this, but its true. Beginners that can play every note, from his first 4 albums, are a dime a dozen, but no one can make it sound like Van Halen. He was innovative and expressive and that made it seem like he was a much better technician than he actually was. That's the way it should be. * I say 'was', because he lost that edge, when he became more technically proficient and didn't need to rely as much on magic tricks.
