Hindsight is the most precise science. Ever heard that? NO ONE 'knew' they were winning/going to win, until the last days. It wouldnt only be a big win for the Germans, but a major defeat for the Allies. You have completely discounted the logistical and morale penalties to the Allies, had the 'Bulge' offensive been successful. It would have divided The Allied front, disorganized command and sewn general chaos, as they attempted to regroup a fragmented army, against a massed army rolling on a victory high, while dealing with mass casualties and severed supply lines. Just because the Allies ultimately won the war, doesnt mean that they would win again, if the entire scenario were played out again. Why do you think they kept telling American troops theyd been home for Christmas? They were already teetering on the edge of depair. One success, or one failure, where it didnt happen before, couldve changed everything, at that point.
