@devinbret Yes, mass. But, the desk is supposed to protect you from crap falling on you. Surviving the initial hard radiation burst is pretty simple and common walls and glass windows will stop it. Fallout is what gets you, but not how you think. Ground bursts eject debris into the air and it gets irradiated in the fireball. It then falls out as fine ash and dust. This dust gets inhaled and ingested and basically pinpricks you a million times, from the inside out. Just for note, 'popcorning' is what causes the peeling flesh thing. High winds essentially sandblast you with radioactive dust, that embeds in your pores and kills the surrounding cells.
