While this is technically correct, an unfounded assumption is made, that the rate of fire is what produced the casualty count. This is highly fallacious. The rapid gunfire went on for awhile, before it alarmed people enough to flee. Its just as likely that a slower, less consistent rate, wouldnt have been as alarming and kept the crowd in place. The target was an area the size of a small suburb, with over 20,000 individuals. The shooting stopped long before the area was cleared, meaning that had he been shooting slower, he just wouldve been shooting longer and at a less aware target. Furthermore, his fire wouldve been more controlled and fewer rounds wouldve missed the target area; because even at that range, elevation and target size, the poor control of bump-fire caused him to over shoot the entire target area with a large number of rounds. So, while its outrageously sensational that he used a 'machinegun', its actually likely the casualties wouldve been greater, with a less sensational weapon.
