  1. You're wrong about silent letters. They are supposed to be pronounced; ignoring them is what creates accents. 'W', for example, is a double vowel('u') sound that preshapes a sound; same with 'silent' e, on the end of words. 'Silent' consonants, when pronounced, change the sound of the preceding vowel, usually by opening it up. Many words that appear to sound alike, really aren't supposed to.
