  1.  @SgtSteel1  Because Iran is making trouble. Iranian supported actors have attacked/threatened primary US interests, numerous times over the past 18 months and we are sending the message that we are holding the owner responsible for the dog.

  6.  @quasar4601  Going into Iraq was not a mistake, Saddam left us with no choice. The mistake, was trying to conduct a war, without hurting anyone's feelings. A major strategy shift occurred in the days before the invasion, due to pressure from UK and threats to pull their support. We needed the coalition for legitimacy, not militarily. That first round of 'shock and awe' bombing over Baghdad, was supposed to be a sustained campaign at more than 500 targets, for a week, but UK was horrified and threatened to pull out. The rub is that after the first 20 min, it would be nothing but rubble bouncing and lots of noise, with no additional casualties, just as a demonstration of capability - a real 'terror' attack. But ironically, UK had a problem with the 'optics' and indeed it was UK that insisted we could separate the military operation, from the socio-political mission. We allowed UK to dictate strategy for our war and that is one of the biggest mistakes we've ever made, as a sovereign nation.

  7.  @quasar4601  Again, the error wasn't going to war, but how that war was prosecuted. The initial objective, was to make an example of Iraq; to conduct a massive, relentless live fire demonstration, as a deterrent to everyone with a TV. That mission was justified and had a much lower bar for success. That strategy was scrapped at the last minute, for 'regime change' and 'nation building', to satisfy the delicate sensibilities of our coalition partners.
